(Chapter 7) God's Law Is a Transcript of His Character
Does our failure to understand the law's real meaning make it any less loving and kind? No, not any more than our failure to understand God makes Him unloving and cruel. When my heart is surrendered to God, and He is allowed to have complete control of my life, then I see His love in His individualized care for me. Because I am completely surrendered to Him I can see the beauty of His character as recorded in His loving law. Let's suppose I wrote out a description of my character. If someone changed the document, would that make any change in who I am? Not at all. But it would affect their understanding of me. They would never be able to truly get to know me the way I am, because they would be assuming that my character is something other than what it is. This is precisely what we have done with God. He wrote out His character, and we have come in and changed things. Now this has not changed God at all, but it has affected our ability to get to know Him. God is still the same. Sin still cannot enter His presence, any more than those breaking the law can stand in its shadow without feeling its crushing weight. To say that the law is no longer needed is to say that God is no longer needed! Both must come together; they are inseparable; one and the same. Because God's law is an expression of Himself, it cannot be changed or abolished without changing or abolishing God!
