Introduction

What is the Sabbath? Where did it come from? To whom was it given? Does it have any meaning or application to me personally? Has its historical and spiritual significance been lost sight of in the last few centuries?

Where did Sunday worship come from? Is it a legitimate Sabbath substitute? Who is right: my church or the Bible? Have you found yourself asking these questions? If you have, you're not alone. Many today are asking these and many other questions; and best of all, they are finding the answers! Where? In God's authoritative Word, the Bible.

I have been asked some of these questions, and have at times asked them myself. This has led me to dig deeper into the Bible and history. My goal was to discover how the Sabbath came to be, how it was observed through the years, if it had any claim on my life, and what its future will be. I was amazed at the wealth of information available as I studied this fascinating subject, and with this illimitable amount of information, I can only highlight a few points.

Why would we want to study such a heavy and controversial subject as the Sabbath? Many people are living life as if it were an endless racetrack. Life is so busy and full, yet people are filled with an overwhelming emptiness. They want to get away from it all, to be alone. They long for time to let their souls catch up to them. This is the purpose of the Sabbath. Jesus calls to every such one, "Come ye yourselves apart ... and rest a while" (Mark 6:31). This is why the Sabbath is so crucial in this present time. It is on this day, more than on any other, that our relationships with God and each other can be most effectively formed and strengthened.

Now, if you will, pull up a chair and open up your Bible with me as together we delve into God's Word. We will be comparing Scripture with Scripture, and line with line, peeking into a few old history books now and then as well. Let's see if we can find God's answers to our questions. In the process we may just find something else too. Do you want to know what it is? We will discover a deeper love and appreciation for the God who loves us so much that He sets aside time to come and spend with us each week. Are you comfortable? Good! Then let's begin with a prayer.

"Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us and for wanting to spend intimate time with us. Help me and this dear reader to hear Your voice speaking to us. Open our eyes to behold wondrous things out of Your Word. May You be with us now through the person of the Holy Spirit. And may our hearts be fully yielded to You just now. Thank You, Father, for answering our prayer. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray. Amen."
